LHK to Add Short-Term Rehab Private Rooms as Part of Expansion

The Kane Republican – Kane, Pennsylvania - The Lutheran Home at Kane (LHK) recently announced its plans for a $5.3 million building expansion and renovation project.  As part of the project, eight private resident rooms dedicated to short-term rehabilitation will be added.

The facility will be adding these private rooms dedicated to individuals undergoing joint replacement surgery such as hip, knee, or shoulder.  These rooms can also be utilized for individuals suffering from an acute health problem such as a heart attack or stroke.  Often times, these individuals only need short-term therapies to gain strength and mobility required to return to their home.

Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) and LHK Director of Rehabilitation, Torie Brem, explained the importance of providing short-term care included in the new expansion and renovation project at LHK.

“Most individuals believe nursing homes are for long-term placement.  Our goal is to build their strength and endurance necessary to complete the activities of daily living they had prior to the acute injury or illness allowing them to return home.  Having a private room will give them the privacy and ability to have therapies performed right in their room,” Brem said.

Intensive rehabilitation could include physical, occupational, and speech therapies after an acute illness or surgery to build up strength to return home.  Short-term care is typically provided for a few weeks or a few months.

This type of care can give seniors the opportunity to receive professional care and attention they may not receive at home.

In addition, short-term care can give at-home caregivers a break and also prevent caregiver burnout.

The addition of the rehabilitation area is one part of the larger renovation and expansion project which is expected to be underway by the end of this year.

The Lutheran Home is constructing a 10,700 square foot addition which will also include new, secure, all private resident rooms Alzheimer’s/Dementia Unit, a new kitchen, a café, a chapel, a telemedicine suite, and additional office and storage space.

Charlotte Floravit, LHK Chief Executive Officer, said the new private short-term rehabilitation rooms will allow LHK to provide care to anyone, not just seniors, who may require this type of care.

“I am excited to add a short-term rehabilitation suite to our expansion and renovation project,” Floravit said.  “These spacious private rooms will allow our rehabilitation team the space for equipment and treatment necessary to work with our residents.  Residents will undergo extensive rehabilitation with the goal of getting them back to their previous level of function.  We have an awesome rehabilitation team focusing on physical, occupational, and speech therapies.”

The Lutheran Home is currently in the quiet phase of their capital campaign. The campaign goal is $2 million and they have already secured more than $600,000.
